The Story of Mile End Delicatessen
Mile End Delicatessen started with a mission: to continue the legacy of our grandmothers' cooking and introduce authentic Montreal-style cuisine to New York. What began as a small dream in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, soon became a beloved neighborhood delicatessen known for its warm hospitality, bold flavors, and Jewish comfort food that honors tradition while embracing innovation.
We opened our first Mile End in 2010 — a tiny Brooklyn restaurant with a big vision: to share the classic dishes of our childhood while presenting a new kind of cuisine to New Yorkers. Using our grandmothers' time-honored recipes as the foundation, we reimagined traditional Jewish fare with fresh ingredients, scratch-made techniques, and a distinctly Canadian-inspired flair.
Modeled after the renowned delicatessens of Montreal's Mile End neighborhood, our Brooklyn eatery blends Jewish delicatessen roots with Canadian comfort classics. From signature smoked-meat sandwiches and homemade hot dogs with tangy kraut to rich poutine, fresh whitefish salad, and matzo-ball soup, every dish celebrates the best of both worlds.
Since the beginning, co-founder Joel Tietolman has led the team with passion and purpose. His Montreal upbringing and lifelong love for Jewish food inspired Mile End Deli's creation and continue to shape its evolution today. At Mile End Delicatessen, we're proud to serve food that connects generations — honoring heritage, sharing culture, and welcoming everyone to our table.
